âWhat we really want is to revamp our Web site and brochures.â The man from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum stood outside talking with Jason. Concentration seemed to be a major problem for Jason today. He leaned forward, trying to see if the man had a name tag, since Jason couldnât recall what heâd said when he introduced himself. âYouâre the professional. I wanted to be able to go around with you, but I canât, so take the pictures you think will best display what we have here.â
âThe view is incredible.â Jason gazed south into the Sonoran Desert, wondering how far he could see.
âLooking out this way, the vista includes part of Mexico. Those mountains you see in the distance are across the border.â The man, Toby somethingâthat was itâgestured at the purple-blue peaks far to the south.
âThe horizon is always deceptive out here.â Jason tried to focus his thoughts, pushing away the picture of a pert redhead.
Tobyâs cell phone chimed. He glanced at the readout window. âIâm afraid I have to go. Busy day. If you need anything, feel free to come in the office and ask.â
âThanks.â As Toby walked away, Jason turned his attention to the map heâd been given with the list of suggested photo subjects. He hadnât realized how many animals, reptiles, and birds were housed at the Desert Museum. Heâd tried to bring Jazmyn here after heâd moved to Tucson from the Northwest, but she hadnât been good at getting out at that point. Heâd have to talk her into bringing Caleb out to see the exhibits once the baby was a little older.
The morning flew by as he went from one display to the next setting up shots. The work proved to be slow as he dodged energetic youngsters who raced from one place to the next. Their parents often appeared bedraggled, one mother in particular whose youngsters reminded Jason of Burke and Blaireâs kids.
At lunchtime Jason headed toward the Ocotillo Café with the voucher Toby had given him. Toby suggested the Ocotillo but assured him the voucher would work at the Ironwood Terrace also if the other was full. When he stepped inside, Jason noted an abundance of winter visitors, people who fled the colder climates to come to Tucson for the frigid months. Since the skies were clear and the sun out, he chose to go to the Ironwood Terrace. With his light jacket, eating outside would be fun.
The Ironwood was crowded with more children clamoring for hot dogs or hamburgers. Jason joined the queue for sandwiches, ordering a marinated chicken breast with prickly pear plum sauce. He carried the tray outside, choosing a small table away from the busiest areas.
All morning heâd been struggling with thoughts of Maddy. Jazmyn had nailed it when she suggested he was running away to his out-of-the-country assignment. Every night he awoke in a sweat with the image of Maddy falling jerking him from sleep. No matter how hard he tried, he couldnât forget her or the feeling of having her in his arms.
